Waste and Pollution Control

Overview

The Waste Management and Pollution Control (WPC) Unit is responsible for regulating, managing, and coordinating Fiji’s national waste and pollution control systems. Operating under the Environment Management Act 2005, the Unit works to protect the environment, safeguard public health, and promote sustainable development through effective waste management and pollution-prevention measures.

The WPC Unit develops and implements national policies, standards, and strategies for solid waste, liquid waste, hazardous waste, and air pollution management. The Unit issues environmental permits for waste discharge activities, monitors compliance, conducts inspections, and takes enforcement action to ensure that industries, businesses, and municipalities meet their environmental obligations.

A key part of the Unit’s work also includes regulating single-use plastics, as all importers of single-use plastics are required to obtain consent from the Department for the release of any plastic consignment into Fiji.

The Unit is also responsible for administering Fiji’s only sanitary landfill – the Naboro Landfill.

Through close collaboration with municipal councils, government agencies, development partners, and the private sector, the WPC Unit aims to strengthen Fiji’s waste management systems, reduce pollution, and promote cleaner, healthier, and more resilient communities.
