The Ministry, in partnership with Trashboom Pacific and the Lautoka City Council, today officially launched the first Trashboom for Lautoka in Musuniwai Creek, marking another important step in protecting Fiji’s rivers, waterways and marine environment from litter.
Launching the Ministry-funded initiative, Minister for Environment and Climate Change Hon. Lynda Tabuya said the success of the Trashboom will ultimately depend on changing public behaviour.
“If this trashboom fills up, it tells us that some people are still not taking responsibility for their rubbish, their homes, their businesses, their communities and their town.”
Hon Tabuya stressed that Laws, fines, infrastructure and trashbooms alone will not fix this problem. This problem will only be solved when people change their behaviour.
As the Ministry continues to commemorate Environment and Oceans Month throughout June, calling on all Fijians to “Do The Right Thing” by disposing of rubbish responsibly and working together to protect our environment and oceans. Every positive action, no matter how small, helps keep our rivers clean, protects marine life, and creates a healthier Fiji for future generations. Together, we all have a responsibility to care for the environment we share.
