Fiji has strengthened its climate transparency systems with the completion of the four-year Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) Project.
Implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute, with UNEP support as the GEF implementing agency, the project enhanced Fiji’s capacity to measure, report and track climate action under the Paris Agreement.
Key achievements include improvements to Fiji’s greenhouse gas inventory data system, NDC tracking, climate finance reporting, institutional coordination, and the Fiji Digital Climate Transparency Tool. The project also supported the development of seven GHG micro-qualifications through the University of the South Pacific.
Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Sivendra Michael, said the project marked an important milestone for Fiji.
“We have built stronger national systems, improved coordination, and enhanced our ability to transparently track and report Fiji’s climate action,” Dr Michael said.
The Ministry is now preparing to develop the proposal for Phase 2 of the project, which will further strengthen Fiji’s climate transparency framework, improve GHG reporting, and support more effective climate planning and decision-making.
The Ministry acknowledges the valuable support of all partners and stakeholders who contributed to the project.
