Following the Fiji Plastics Transition Roadmap Co-Design Workshop earlier this week, stakeholders have moved from developing the strategic direction to identifying practical actions needed to drive Fiji’s plastics transition to increased resource efficiency.
Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Sivendra Michael, opened the Fiji Plastics Transition Action Plan Co-Design Workshop in Lami today (20.08.26), bringing together representatives from Government, the private sector, academia, civil society and development partners.
The Action Plan will build on the Roadmap by identifying priority actions, responsibilities, partnerships and delivery pathways needed for implementation.
Dr Michael said Fiji was not starting from zero, with important work already underway, including the Cabinet-endorsed National Waste Management and Pollution Control Strategy, development of Fiji’s plastics data inventory, and ongoing work on the Beverage Container Deposit Regulation.
“At the end of this process, we do not simply want a Roadmap and Action Plan that sit on a shelf. We want a clear direction for Fiji, supported by practical actions that can guide decisions, investment and partnerships that will lead to real change in how plastics are produced, used and managed in our country,” Dr Michael told the participants.
Participants will focus on collectively identifying what needs to happen, who needs to lead and support implementation, and what resources and partnerships will be required.
The outcomes of both workshops will directly inform Fiji’s Plastics Transition Roadmap and Action Plan, ensuring it is practical, achievable and aligned with national priorities while driving meaningful change in how plastics are produced, used and managed across Fiji.
