Fiji and the United Arab Emirates are looking at ways to work together on waste collection, recycling and keeping rubbish out of rivers and the ocean.
Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change Hon. Lynda Tabuya met UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment H.E. Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak Al Shamsi in New York.
Minister Tabuya outlined Fiji’s plans to reduce waste going to Naboro Landfill by separating and recycling more rubbish. She also sought UAE expertise to help expand Fiji’s trashboom programme, which catches floating waste in waterways.
The Ministers discussed plastic pollution, climate resilience and renewable energy, including the UAE’s USD 1.5 million commitment to the next phase of the LAKARO Renewable Energy Project for Lakeba, Kadavu and Rotuma.
Minister Tabuya welcomed the UAE’s plans to open an embassy in Suva and its participation in Pre-COP31 in Nadi.
