Climate Change Mitigation in Fiji
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to a low-carbon economy
Fiji’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)
We are the Coordinators of the Fiji’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), a commitment to the full, effective, and transparent implementation of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Fiji’s first NDC was submitted to the UNFCCC in 2015, and the second (updated) NDC was submitted in 2020, in line with the Paris Agreement. Fiji has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% by 2030.
We also coordinate and facilitate the implementation of the Fiji Low Emissions Development Strategy (LEDS). Compiled in 2018, the LEDS is a living document that lays out the pathway for implementing mitigation actions needed to achieve net-zero or net-negative emissions by 2050. We are currently developing a National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory to support evidence-based decision making.
We are developing Sectoral Monitoring and Reporting Systems by mainstreaming GHG accounting across Government and sub-national levels. Our current focus is the agriculture sector through the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) project.
We also represent Fiji at the UNFCCC, covering global commitments on Climate Mitigation and Carbon Markets.
