Mitigation

Overview

We are the coordinators of the Fiji’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), a commitment to the full, effective and transparent implementation of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Fiji’s first NDC was submitted to the UNFCCC in 2015 and the second (or updated) NDC was submitted in 2020, in line with the Paris Agreement. Fiji has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.

We also coordinate and facilitate the implementation of the Fiji Low Emissions Development Strategy (LEDS). The LEDS is a living document compiled in 2018 which lays out the pathway for implementation of mitigation actions needed to achieve net-zero or net-negative emissions by the year 2050. We are currently working on developing a National Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory

We are also developing Sectoral Monitoring and Reporting Systems by mainstreaming GHG accounting across Government and the sub-national level. We are currently focusing on the agriculture sector through the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) project.

We are also Fiji’s Representative to the UNFCCC. This and similar work covers Global Commitments on Climate Mitigation and Carbon Markets. In that context, we are developing Biennial Update ReportsNational Communications, and Biennial Transparency Reports.

Harnessing the Sun: Powering Fiji’s Sustainable Future

Solar energy stands as a cornerstone in Fiji’s journey toward achieving its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). By capturing the abundant sunlight across the islands, solar power reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels and cuts greenhouse gas emissions.

This clean and renewable energy source not only strengthens Fiji’s resilience to climate change but also empowers communities through affordable and sustainable electricity.

As solar technology continues to expand, it drives the nation closer to its vision of a low-carbon, energy-secure future.
