The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly is where countries help shape the next round of global environmental and climate funding, known as GEF-9. Fiji needs to be at the table to ensure the priorities of small island nations are heard before funding decisions are made.
For Fiji, this means pushing for climate finance that is easier to access, faster to receive, and better suited to the realities of Pacific countries. Fiji is advocating for more support to protect coastlines, strengthen water security, build climate-resilient infrastructure, respond to climate-related loss and damage, and develop innovative solutions such as climate insurance.
As Chair of the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS), Hon. Lynda Tabuya is representing not only Fiji but the wider Pacific, ensuring that future climate funding reaches the communities that need it most. Simply put, if Fiji is not in the room when these decisions are made, Pacific priorities may not be reflected in how billions of dollars in climate and environmental funding are allocated over the coming years.
