The Importance of Fiji's Oceans

Fiji’s ocean territory spans approximately 1.3 million square kilometers, making it larger than its land mass. This vast marine ecosystem supports incredible biodiversity, including over 400 coral species and more than 1,200 fish species.

Our oceans are central to Fijian culture, food security, and economy. They provide livelihoods through fisheries and tourism, protect our coastlines from storms, and play a crucial role in regulating the global climate.

However, climate change poses significant threats to these vital marine ecosystems through ocean warming, acidification, sea level rise, and changing weather patterns.

Climate Change Impacts on Our Oceans

Ocean Warming

Rising sea temperatures cause coral bleaching, affecting the health of our reefs and the marine life that depends on them. Since 1980, Fiji's waters have warmed by approximately 0.6°C, leading to more frequent and severe bleaching events.

Ocean Acidification

Increased carbon dioxide absorption is making our oceans more acidic, threatening the survival of corals, shellfish, and other calcifying organisms. This disrupts the entire marine food web and compromises reef structural integrity.

Sea Level Rise

Rising sea levels threaten coastal communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems. In Fiji, sea levels are rising at approximately 4mm per year, increasing coastal erosion, flooding, and saltwater intrusion into freshwater sources.

Changing Weather Patterns

Climate change is intensifying tropical cyclones and altering rainfall patterns, affecting marine ecosystems through increased runoff, sedimentation, and physical damage from storms.
