Bangkok, Thailand β PSIDS Chair Hon. Lynda Tabuya has reaffirmed Fijiβs leadership on climate action, oceans and sustainable development during a bilateral meeting with the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Mr. Li Junhua.
Discussions focused on strengthening Fijiβs partnership with the United Nations and preparations for the Pacific-hosted Pre-COP meeting, which Fiji will host from 5β8 October with Australiaβs support ahead of COP31.
Hon. Tabuya said Pre-COP provides a vital opportunity to place Pacific priorities at the centre of global climate negotiations, highlighting the regionβs leadership in practical climate solutions.
She outlined Fijiβs priorities for COP31, including protecting the 1.5Β°C goal, improving access to climate finance for Small Island Developing States, strengthening recognition of the ocean-climate nexus, and amplifying Pacific voices in global decision-making.
The Minister also welcomed the appointment of Hon. Inia Seruiratu as the Pacific Climate Envoy for the Ocean under the TΓΌrkiyeβAustralia COP31 Presidency, saying Fiji looks forward to working closely with the Pacific Climate Envoys, regional leaders and partners to advance shared priorities.
Hon. Tabuya reaffirmed Fijiβs commitment to working with the United Nations and international partners to ensure Pacific priorities continue to shape global climate action.
