The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Waste, Pollution and Control (WPC) Unit conducted a composting of organic waste training session for Year 9 and 10 agricultural science students at Suva Grammar School.
The session provided students with hands-on demonstrations and learning practical ways to turn organic waste into compost.
The session also highlighted the importance of proper waste sorting for recycling and composting, equipping students with essential knowledge to support sustainable practices at school and in their communities.
During the training, the WPC Unit staff encouraged students to take pride in their environment, emphasising that civic responsibility and environmental care can be achieved through teamwork and collective effort.
Teachers were also urged to support and guide students in maintaining proper composting practices within the school.
The Department also emphasised that regular monitoring will be carried out to ensure the initiative’s effectiveness.
Teachers were requested to provide data on the volume of waste disposed into compost bins, as well as the amount of recyclables collected from the steel cage.
This initiative follows the recent launch and handover of composting materials to schools by the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, aimed at promoting recycling, reducing waste, and building environmental awareness among Fiji’s younger generations.
