As Fiji steps up preparations for Pacific Climate Week and the Pre-COP31, Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change Hon. Lynda Tabuya held bilateral meetings with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the Pacific Community (SPC) in Sydney this week to strengthen regional cooperation and advance the Pacific’s shared climate priorities.
Minister Tabuya met with SPREP Director-General Mr Sefanaia Nawadra and his team, to strengthen collaboration between Fiji and SPREP in the lead-up to Pacific Climate Week and the Pre-COP, and to reaffirm SPREP’s role as the region’s lead technical and scientific agency on climate and environment issues.
Hon. Tabuya also met with SPC’s newly appointed Deputy Director-General, Science and Capability, Dr Andrew Jones, together with his team. The meeting focused on deepening cooperation between Fiji and SPC in support of Pacific Climate Week and Pre-COP preparations, and on how SPC’s scientific and technical expertise can continue to support Pacific priorities as Fiji leads the PSIDS grouping towards COP31.
The meetings with SPREP and SPC reflects the breadth of regional coordination underway as the Pacific prepares for a critical stretch of climate diplomacy, from Pacific Climate Week through to the Pre-COP in Fiji and COP31 in Türkiye.
Minister Tabuya reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to working closely with the Pacific Islands Forum, CROP agencies and Pacific partners to ensure the region speaks with one voice through this process.
She acknowledged SPREP and SPC for their continued partnership and support to Fiji and the Pacific region during this critical preparatory period.
