“Protecting our environment begins with each one of us, but lasting change happens when Government, communities and the private sector work together.”
This was the message from the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Lynda Tabuya, as she officiated at the 15th Anniversary Celebration of South Pacific Waste Recyclers in Suva this evening (29.07.26).
The event celebrated 15 years of South Pacific Waste Recyclers’ contribution to Fiji’s waste management sector, recognising the company’s role in recovering recyclable materials, reducing waste sent to landfills, creating employment opportunities and supporting environmental sustainability through recycling and resource recovery.
The Minister acknowledged that waste management is no longer just an environmental issue, but also one that affects public health, the economy, climate and sustainable development.
She noted that, with increasing waste generation driven by population growth, urbanisation, tourism and changing consumption patterns, Fiji must continue to strengthen partnerships to address these growing challenges.
Hon. Tabuya highlighted the Government’s ongoing work to improve waste management across the country through the recently finalised National Waste Management and Pollution Control Strategy 2026–2035, which provides a long-term roadmap for managing municipal waste, plastics, hazardous waste, e-waste, end-of-life vehicles and pollution control. She also highlighted progress on the Container Deposit Regulations, which will introduce a refund system for beverage containers to encourage recycling and reduce litter nationwide.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change congratulates South Pacific Waste Recyclers on reaching this significant milestone and acknowledges its valued partnership in supporting Fiji’s journey towards a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future.
