Fiji and Spain are exploring stronger cooperation on climate change, environmental resilience and sustainable ocean management, following a bilateral meeting between Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change Hon. Lynda Tabuya and Spain’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Hon. Luis Planas.
Held in Palau today (31:08:2026), the bilateral meeting focused on shared environmental challenges and opportunities for greater cooperation between Spain and Fiji.
Minister Tabuya highlighted the central importance of the ocean to Fiji and the wider Pacific, noting that Pacific countries have far more ocean than land and depend heavily on the marine environment for food, livelihoods and development.
Climate change and adaptation were also key areas of discussion, with Fiji highlighting its efforts to advance climate-smart approaches across agriculture and fisheries and strengthen resilience to the impacts of climate change.
As Fiji prepares for Pre-COP31, Minister Tabuya welcomed greater international engagement and invited Spain to participate.
She stressed the importance of international partnerships in advancing climate action and ensuring that Pacific priorities are reflected in global climate discussions.
Minister Planas said Spain was keen to deepen its relationship with Fiji and the Pacific and highlighted Spain’s experience in renewable energy, climate adaptation, sustainable water management and environmental risk management.
He said Spain was also looking to share its experience and expertise with Pacific countries, including through a proposed regional seminar in Madrid next year focusing on the blue economy and resilience
