The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change today (28.08.26) conducted its Western Division Litter Prevention Officers (LPO) Refresher Training in Lautoka, bringing together municipal council officers from Sigatoka to Rakiraki.
The training focused on the Litter (Amendment) Act 2026, ensuring officers are clear on the changes to the law and their responsibilities in enforcing it.
Ministry staff of the Waste Pollution and Control Unit outlined the roles and powers of municipal councils, particularly the authority given to trained and appointed Litter Prevention Officers to take enforcement action against littering.
Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Sivendra Michael says, under the amended law, authorised Litter Prevention Officers can issue a on the spot fine of $200 to anyone caught littering.
The Ministry is strengthening its partnership with municipal councils and other law enforcement authorities to step up litter enforcement across Fiji.
Litter Prevention Officers from municipal councils in the Central and Northern Divisions will undergo their refresher training on Monday, 31 August.
Keeping Fiji clean is a shared responsibility, but those who choose to litter must also be prepared to face the consequences of $200 fine.
