Resource Management & Partnerships
Overview
The Resource Management and Partnerships Unit is mandated to coordinate, monitor, and enforce sustainable natural resource management and biodiversity conservation across Fiji’s flora, fauna, and other natural resources. The Unit works in partnership with communities, stakeholders, and enforcement authorities to ensure sustainable use, protection, and restoration of natural ecosystems.
Our Objectives
The Unit establishes, maintains, and leverages a comprehensive information base to support sustainable natural resource management. Key actions include:
Supporting community-based conservation initiatives, including awareness campaigns and capacity building.
Administering permitting processes related to resource use, conservation activities, and biodiversity protection.
Coordinating with enforcement authorities on Endangered and Protected Species-related permits, inspections, and penalties.
Promoting public and industry awareness on responsible management of natural resources and biodiversity.
Reporting and implementing Multilateral Environment Agreements, including:
National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP 2020-2025)
Endangered and Protected Species (EPS) Act 2002 and subsequent amendments
EPS Regulations 2003
Conducting surveys, monitoring, and assessments to inform policy and action.
Developing and maintaining a centralized database on species, habitats, and conservation initiatives.
Facilitating partnerships with research institutions, NGOs, and community groups to strengthen conservation outcomes.
Advising government and private stakeholders on sustainable resource use, ecosystem restoration, and best management practices.
Implementing programs to mitigate threats to biodiversity, such as habitat loss, invasive species, and unsustainable exploitation.
Supporting the development of national policies, strategies, and action plans aligned with international environmental commitments.
Through these initiatives, the Unit ensures the protection of Fiji’s natural resources, strengthens partnerships with stakeholders, and contributes to the long-term sustainability of biodiversity and ecosystems.
